Roy E. Ladd
Roy
Ladd was born on a farm in Southern Idaho, where he was
raised and completed high school.
During World War II he attended Idaho State University
for three years and then entered into the Navy’s V-12
Officer Training Program. He completed his military
training in Midshipman’s School in Virginia and went on
to serve his country in the Navy from 1943 to 1946. One
of Roy’s highlights during his service was his serving
as Port Director in Tanggu, China. After the war he
returned to Idaho where he married June Priest and
settled down to become a High School Math Teacher and
Basketball Coach. However, he longed for a more exciting
career and later entered the construction field.
He worked fifteen years with Gibbons and Reed Company
starting as a driller on Boysen Dam Railroad Relocation
in Wyoming, progressing through all foreman stages in
two years. He worked six years as Superintendent -
multiple types of work, including railroad relocation,
mining (perlite and iron ore), airport, eight highways,
mostly canyon work, lots of rock, work in Oregon,
Wyoming, Utah, and California. In seven years as Project
Manager in Northern California, Roy built three earth
and rock filled multi-purpose dams, including
Whiskeytown Dam near Redding CA - two sections on the
Interstate Freeway in the Sacramento River Canyon and
numerous other highway jobs.
In 1963 Roy Ladd made his permanent home in Redding,
California, where he and Walley Hughes formed their own
company: Hughes And Ladd Inc. The company was
reorganized in 1975 as Roy E. Ladd Inc.; Roy served as
president of the company since it’s formation in 1963.
As well as his construction interests, Roy was involved
in the Scouting program for over 40 years. He served as
an Assistant Scoutmaster in Portland, Oregon, and as
Scoutmaster in Mt. Shasta, California, and again
Assistant Scoutmaster in Redding, California. In 1975 he
was elected to serve as the President of the Mt. Lassen
Area Council after previously serving six years as Vice
President of the council and Camping Chairman. For his
outstanding accomplishments and continuous support of
the scouting program he was awarded the Silver Beaver
award, among the most distinguished in Scouting. He also
served on the executive board of the Mt. Lassen Area
Division of the Golden Empire Council, which serves the
scouting aged youth in Trinity, Shasta, Tehama, and Glen
Counties. In 1995 he was awarded the Good Scout Award by
the Mt. Lassen Area Council of the Boy scouts of
America.
In addition to his involvement in scouting, Roy Ladd was
a consistent supporter of the Redding area community
activities. He was a consistent supporter of City
recreational leagues basketball teams and sponsored the
Ladd Invitational Basketball Tournament for many years.
He also provided an annual scholarship for music to the
Shasta Union High School for many years.
Roy was forced to retire in 1996 because of failing
health and passed away in 1999. His wife, June Ladd,
passed away three years later in 2002. They had two
children, Eric and Rebecca, three grandchildren and five
step-grandchildren. |
